Technology & Architecture Glossary

Clear, definitive definitions of cloud infrastructure, data platform, applied artificial intelligence, and search optimisation terms. Written by senior engineers to be accurate, quotable, and practical.

Azure Landing Zone

An Azure Landing Zone is a multi-subscription cloud environment configured with automated governance, network segmentation, identity perimeters, and security baselines. Aligned with Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF), it provides an enterprise-ready foundation for deploying workloads safely at scale.

Microsoft Fabric

Microsoft Fabric is an all-in-one, enterprise software-as-a-service (SaaS) data analytics platform. It unifies data engineering, data warehousing, real-time analytics, machine learning, and Power BI business intelligence on top of a single open OneLake data store.

Lakehouse

A lakehouse is a modern data architecture that combines the scalability, low cost, and raw unstructured format support of a data lake with the transactional ACID compliance, indexing, schema enforcement, and high-speed querying of a relational data warehouse.

Medallion Architecture

Medallion Architecture is a structured data design pattern that organizes a data lake into three progressive layers: Bronze (raw, ingested data), Silver (cleaned, validated, enriched records), and Gold (aggregated, business-level datasets ready for reporting and machine learning).

Microsoft Entra

Microsoft Entra is Microsoft’s unified family of cloud identity and network access solutions. It encompasses Microsoft Entra ID (workforce identity), Microsoft Entra External ID (customer identity and access management), and Privileged Identity Management (PIM).

Conditional Access

Conditional Access is a zero-trust policy engine within Microsoft Entra that evaluates real-time signals—such as user identity, device compliance, IP geolocation, and risk telemetry—to enforce access decisions (allow, require step-up MFA, or block) automatically.

CIAM (Customer Identity & Access Management)

CIAM refers to digital identity systems that secure and manage authentication, single sign-on (SSO), profile registration, and privacy consent for external customers and platform consumers, balancing rigorous security controls with frictionless user onboarding.

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)

Retrieval-Augmented Generation is an AI system architecture that retrieves authoritative, domain-specific documents from an external vector index or database before passing them to a Large Language Model (LLM) as context, ensuring factual, grounded, and auditable generative responses.

AI Agent

An AI Agent is an autonomous software system powered by a foundation model that can observe its environment, formulate multi-step execution plans, call external APIs or tools, evaluate intermediate results, and complete complex business workflows without continuous human prompting.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

Infrastructure as Code is the practice of provisioning and managing cloud compute, networking, and storage resources through declarative, version-controlled configuration files rather than manual cloud portal clicks, ensuring repeatable, automated, and auditable deployments.

Bicep

Bicep is a domain-specific language (DSL) created by Microsoft that provides clean syntax, type safety, modular reusability, and first-class tooling for authoring declarative Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates to deploy Azure infrastructure.

FinOps

FinOps (Financial Operations) is an operational framework and cultural practice that unites engineering, finance, and business teams to bring financial accountability, automated tagging, and continuous cost optimization to cloud resource consumption.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the discipline of optimizing website server architecture, crawling paths, indexing directives, rendering performance, structured schema markup, and internal linking to ensure search engine spiders can efficiently discover, parse, and rank web pages.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring digital content, verified data tables, direct answers, and technical schema so that AI search engines (like ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews) accurately cite and synthesize your brand’s authority.

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are a standardised set of real-world user experience metrics defined by Google measuring page load speed (Largest Contentful Paint), visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift), and interactive responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint).

Semantic Model

A semantic model is a standardized business data layer (such as in Power BI or Microsoft Fabric) that defines table relationships, business metrics, DAX calculations, and security hierarchies, allowing business users to query complex datasets without writing raw SQL.

Synthetic Media

Synthetic media refers to high-fidelity audio, video, imagery, or digital presenters generated or modified using generative artificial intelligence models, enabling scalable video localization, automated product demonstrations, and virtual brand ambassadors.
